Today’s Employees Demand Indoor Air Quality at Work

If you want to attract and retain a quality workforce, paying attention to indoor air quality (IAQ) is a must. A new survey from Fellowes finds that nearly half of all employees would consider quitting their jobs over poor indoor air quality. That is a pretty motivating figure.

The percentage is highest in the younger generations, with Millennial at 44% and Gen Z at 50% compared with just 18% of Baby Boomers. “The survey shows a clear shift in employee awareness of indoor air quality and its impact on their health, comfort, and performance,” says Jason Jones, director of air quality management at Fellowes. “Clean air is no longer a perk; it’s a baseline,”

So, we know that indoor air quality is and will continue to be important to attracting and retaining a workforce, but what does good IAQ look like?

  1. Fresh Air is Key. Incorporating fresh air for IAQ is not as simple as ‘opening a window’. It means intentionally bringing filtered fresh air into the building. This can be accomplished with existing equipment – for example, adding an economizer to a rooftop unit – or by adding a dedicated fresh air system, like a make up air unit or energy recovery ventilator.
  2. Air Purification Units. If adding fresh air is not a possibility, installing air purification units designed to improve the  quality of the recirculated air is a great alternative.
  3. Ductwork Cleaning. Most commercial buildings have ductwork to circulate air throughout the building. Over time, this ductwork collects dust, debris, spores and other particles that build up over time. If ducts are not cleaned regularly, you could actually be circulating this debris in the air every time your system fan turns on. Ick.

Today’s workforce knows the importance of quality air and is willing to leave a job that doesn’t provide it. With lots of great options available for making a cleaner and more productive workplace for your teams or your tenants, you can provide that IAQ that they’re looking for.
